In 2018, Mooshka came into our lives—a stoic blue roan mule saved from the slaughter pipeline. Her eyes told the story of her past, one marked by years of toil and abuse as a working mule. Her body bore the scars of her labor: the telltale stiffness of ringbone and a hip injury that caused her pain. She had little interest in people, her trust worn thin by years of hardship. But there was one exception: my son, Dalton. From the moment they met, Mooshka found comfort in him, as if she knew she had finally found a safe place to land.
As we brought her back to health, her personality began to unfold, like a flower blooming in sunlight. She remained the most stoic animal I had ever encountered, but her walls slowly came down as she experienced the love and care she had been so cruelly denied. Despite her physical limitations, she had a quiet strength that drew people in. The more love Mooshka received, the more she gave back, and it wasn’t long before she became everyone’s favorite on the ranch.
It was clear that Mooshka had a gift—one that went far beyond her physical presence. Her gentle, grounding energy made her a natural fit for our equine-partnered wellness programs. In her unassuming way, Mooshka held space for people looking to unpack trauma and heal. Her presence was transformative. Without judgment or expectation, she helped clients address and release the blockages buried deep within them. She moved with care, always ensuring her humans felt safe, seen, and supported. She was 100% trustworthy, a steadfast companion in the healing process.
For years, Mooshka’s quiet wisdom brought peace to all who crossed her path. But as time passed, her body began to slow. The ringbone advanced, and we believe she may have slipped, worsening her already-injured hip. We tried everything—medical treatments, natural remedies, and even explored the possibility of surgery. But ultimately, her body could no longer sustain her, even though her spirit was still so vibrant and full of life.
Letting her go was one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever made. Mooshka was not ready to leave this earth, but we had to honor her and ease her pain. On that day, we said goodbye to a being who had touched countless lives with her kindness and grace.
Mooshka was a glowing example of the gifts these incredible beings can offer outside of being worked or ridden. She taught us that value is not measured in what you can do, but in who you are and the love you give. Her sweetness and resilience were unparalleled. I often find myself wishing we had been able to raise her, sparing her the hurt she endured before she came to us. But I take solace in knowing we saved her from an awful fate and gave her the love and care she deserved in her final years.
Mooshka is why I do what I do. She is why I fight tirelessly for funding, why I refuse to quit, and why I will never stop advocating for animals like her. She is why I believe we must do better—because all animals deserve more than they are often given. Humans have lost sight of compassion, blinded by opportunity, money, and ego. Mooshka reminds us of what we stand to gain when we choose love instead.
Even after all the pain inflicted on her by humans, Mooshka chose to love and to heal the very species that once failed her. Her story is a testament to the wisdom, forgiveness, and grace that animals bring into our lives. We have so much to learn from them if only we take the time to listen.
This giving season, we ask you to help us honor Mooshka’s legacy. Your support allows us to continue this vital work—rescuing, healing, and sharing the gifts of animals like Mooshka with the world. Our goal is to find 3,500 amazing donors willing to give just $5 a month. This funding covers the daily needs of hay, grain, and basic vet and farrier care, so we can focus on expanding our equine-partnered wellness programs to those in need.
You can also honor Mooshka by purchasing a memorial brick, horseshoe, birdbath, wind chime, or bench to be placed in our Memorial Meditation Garden. Come visit, reconnect with nature, and witness the magic of these incredible beings for yourself.
Mooshka’s legacy lives on in the work we do every day. She showed us the power of love and healing, and with your help, we can continue to share that power with others. Together, we can make a difference—for the animals, for the people they heal, and for the world.
In memory of Mooshka.
